Monticello approves new fee schedule

Members of the Monticello City Council approved a new fee schedule, gave a 12-month extension on a building project and approved participation in events celebrating the United State’s 250th birthday.
Members of the city council approved a resolution updating the consolidated fee schedule for the city at the September 23rd meeting.

Late for a Mormon Thanksgiving

On August 10, 1848, the Mormon pioneers that had traveled to Utah, celebrated their first season’s harvest.
Remember, when they entered Utah in 1847, all they had, in provisions and livestock, was what was in their handcarts and ox-drawn wagons.
They had to make it through a harsh winter with what they had, or what they could purchase from established ranchers, or get from the indigenous tribes, they encountered.

Blanding city approves two of three rezones and plans to update Mobile home zoning

Members of the Blanding City Council denied one zone request for a Mobile Home zoning, approved two other rezones and began discussions about revisiting the requirements in Mobile Home zoning at their latest meeting.

Recently we were enjoying a breakfast buffet in the sunroom of a motel in New Mexico, when a truck pulled into the parking lot and backed up near the window. “Orkin,’ it said. ‘Pests, mosquitoes, termites, and cockroaches,’ followed by the ominous ‘and more,’ (meaning bedbugs, which no one ever talks about). I started to itch, just thinking about it.

Now that I am officially a senior citizen, having achieved the advanced age of 65 last year, I have become suspicious of old people and their resistance to change.
In our small town the mean age is approximately 68 years, and many of our locals like things …just …the …way …they …are. “Keep Bluff, Bluff” is the town’s unofficial motto, and strict fidelity to the past the objective.

Weather Service gives EF2 ratings to two San Juan tornados in 2025

The National Weather Service has issued additional information about recent tornados in San Juan County on Saturday, September 13.
The National Weather Service reported two tornadoes touched down on September 13, with one recorded by the agency to be lasting about 15 minutes and causing no damage, with no rating given on the tornado.
The second reported tornado touched down at 12:58 pm and lasted until 1:45 pm.

Monticello football falls to Norwood 36-6, drops to 2-3 on the season

The Monticello High School football team was defeated by the Norwood Mavericks 36-6 on September 19. The loss drops the Buckaroos to 2-3 on the season.
Monticello fell behind Norwood 8-0 after one quarter, with the Mavericks pushing their lead to 22-0 at halftime.

Body of missing man discovered in San Juan

The body of Jamey Eugene Holyoak, a Moab area resident who was reported missing in April, 2022, has been recovered and identified.
On September 11, 2025, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to skeletal remains that had been found by a citizen in San Juan County.
The Utah Medical Examiner’s office confirmed that the skeletal remains were human.

San Juan football team tramples Rabbits on the road, improves to 5-1

The San Juan High School football team cruised to a 61-7 win over Delta in Delta this past Friday, September 19.
It was the Broncos’ second blowout win in a row and improves them to 5-1 on the season.
Other than a couple trips into the San Juan red zone early in the game the Rabbits were never a threat.
