Indian Creek climbing restrictions end

September 1 marks the end of this year’s raptor nesting season and raptor avoidance measures. All climbing areas in Indian Creek will now be available for visitors.
BLM biologists identified three raptor nests in the avoidance area that had a successful fledgling!
• At the Cliffs of Insanity, a golden eagle pair successfully raised a fledgling.

Supreme Court ruling may impact NEPA use

The U.S. Supreme Court made a landmark decision on May 27 that may streamline the process of how proposed projects on federal land are approved.
The court upheld the federal environmental review of the Uinta Basin Railway, opening the door for the construction of the 88-mile rail line that would connect the Uinta Basin to Helper, where it can connect with the national freight network.

The Department of Interior has approved the reopening of a uranium mine in Lisbon Valley.
On May 23 the Department of Interior (DOI) announced the approvals for Canadian based Anfield energy to operate the Velvet-Wood mines in Lisbon Valley.

BLM asks climbers to protect raptors in Indian Creek

The Bureau of Land Management urges climbers and outdoor recreationists to avoid certain areas in Indian Creek from March through late summer to protect nesting raptors.
Falcons, eagles and hawks return annually to nest on cliffs and rock walls, and human disturbance can jeopardize their success.
Notices have been posted, and climbers should refer to BLM’s raptor protection map to identify avoidance areas. 

Bears Ears boundary will be revisited

An order for a review of national monument boundaries, including the Bears Ears National Monument, is underway at the US Department of Interior.
The review is part of a secretarial order from new Trump administration appointee for the department of the interior secretary Doug Burgum. 
The order, released February 3, is entitled ‘Unleashing American Energy’.

Climber hangs upside down for four hours

A man from Colorado was rescued after hanging upside down by his right foot for more than four hours on October 27 on the south face of North Six Shooter Peak.
A complicated search and rescue effort, involving a tremendous amount of equipment, training, technology, communication, cooperation and sheer bravery, was required to pull off the rescue.

Sediment creates new small Cataract rapid

Major sediment slump changes conditions in Cataract Canyon
Another major sediment slump in Cataract Canyon has altered water flow in the main channel and created a new small rapid.
The slump occurred in Narrow Canyon at river mile 175.1 sometime between Oct 25th and Oct 29th. Approximately 300-350 meters of shoreline slid from the river-left bank into the river channel.

Cowboy Camp theft results in charges

Two Colorado residents have been charged by misdemeanor information, alleging they trespassed, disrupted, and stole from the historic Cave Springs Cowboy Camp in Canyonlands National Park.

BLM seeks Bears Ears Councils

The BLM is seeking public nominations for positions that are, or will soon become, vacant on its Bears Ears National Monument Advisory Committee, and Utah Resource Advisory Council. Nominations must be submitted by Nov. 20, 2024.

Shingle Mill burn in Patrol Status

Manti-La Sal National Forest fire officials pause on implementing Fall prescribed burning within the Shingle Mill project area on the Monticello Ranger District. The Shingle Mill project area is located west and southwest of Monticello. Previously, approximately 1,500 acres of re-entry broadcast burning was scheduled to be conducted within the Shingle Mill project area.

Proposed management plan released for Bears Ears National Monument

A proposed plan to manage Bears Ears National Monument is set to be released by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and U.S. Forest Service on October 4.
In an interview with Redrock92, Jake Palma, field manager of the Monticello Field Office of the BLM, explained that the public input resulted in several changes to the initial plan.

Tourism to area parks adds $486 million

A new National Park Service report shows that 2.4 million visitors to national parks of the Southeast Utah Group in 2023 spent $397.6 million in communities near the four parks.
That spending supported 5,122 jobs in the region and had a cumulative benefit to local economies of $486.1 million.
