The Monument Valley High School volleyball team ran their record to seven wins and four losses with two wins over the course of the past couple weeks.
The Lady Cougars defeated Many Farms, AZ in straight sets on September 2 and swept Newcomb, NM on September 12. Their only loss in the last two weeks was a 3-2 thriller at Grand County on September 10.
Monument Valley has won three of their last four matches and five of the last seven. With their 7-4 overall record they were ranked fifth in the Utah 1A standings at the start of this week.
In the win against Many Farms on September 2 the Lady Cougars outscored the Lobos 25-11, 25-15, and 25-12.
The match with Grand County on September 10 went back and forth the entire night. Monument Valley opened with a 25-20 win in the first set, but the Lady Red Devils rallied to tie with a 25-18 victory.
In set three the Lady Cougars again established momentum with a 25-20 win, but the hometown squad also rallied again to tie the match with a hard-fought 25-21 win.
In the fifth and final set the momentum Grand had established was too much to overcome and Monument Valley fell by a final of 15-5.
They bounced back though for a very nice win against Newcomb, NM this past Friday in straight sets, 25-16, 28-26, and 25-20.
The Lady Cougars opened this week with a rivalry matchup in Monticello against the Lady Buckaroos, played after the San Juan Record print deadline. They’re next in action at home on Tuesday, September 23 against Pinon, AZ.
