Wild fire on east edge of Monticello

A wild fire on the eastern edge of Monticello has consumed less than five acres of grass and several outbuildings. The fire broke out at about 10 a.m. on June 13 in windy and dry conditions. Several fire engines and tankers responded to the blaze, and the crews were still fighting the flames as of 11:30 a.m.

Monticello native is Salt Lake Police Chief

Monticello native Brian Redd has been named police chief for the Salt Lake City Police Department. 
Redd is currently serving as the executive director of the Utah Department of Corrections. Before that appointment, he worked as vice president of Goldman Sachs’s Compliance Division.

Blanding Mayor Logan Monson is strengthening his lead in the race for the local Republican seat in the Utah House of Representatives as votes continue to be counted from the June 25 primary election.
Monson’s narrow 27-vote lead over Lynn Jackson grew to 112 votes after several hundred additional ballots were reported on June 26.

Massive voter turnout may send Blanding Mayor to Utah House of Representatives

A massive voter turnout in the Blanding area may have been the key factor in tight race in the Republican effort to replace Phil Lyman in the Utah House of Representatives.
After primary election ballots were counted on June 25, Blanding Mayor Logan Monson has a razor-thin advantage over Moab resident Lynn Jackson, 3,527 to 3,500. That is 50.2 percent for Monson and 49.8 percent for Jackson.

Two Republican primary races still too close to call

As of 10:15 p.m. on election night, there are still several hundred uncounted votes, largely from the Blanding area, after San Juan County Republicans participated in a primary election on June 25.
As a result, it is still too soon to call the race to replace San Juan County Commissioner Bruce Adams.

Cas Melanson White to 7th District Court

Cas Melanson White has been appointed to Utah’s Seventh District Juvenile Court, filling a vacancy created by Presiding Judge Mary L. Manley’s retirement. Judicial appointments are made by the Governor and are subject to confirmation by the Utah Senate.

Lyman selects running mate

Blanding resident and Republican Primary Gubernatorial candidate Phil Lyman announced Natalie Clawson as his selection for Lieutenant Governor running mate on May 3. The announcement came following a ruling that declared Layne Bangerter ineligible for the position based on a Utah Constitutional requirement that candidates be a citizen of the state for five years prior to running for office.

Empire Electric returns $1.68 million in capital credits

Empire Electric Association (EEA) will return $1,684,038.87 in capital credits to eligible members.
These funds will be distributed as bill credits or mailed as checks in April.
Any revenue remaining after all expenses have been paid in a fiscal year are termed margins.

Nine businesses receive grants for solar arrays

Nine more local business in San Juan County are participating in the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). They are among 17 projects in Utah to purchase and install a solar array.
Coral Sands RV Park in Bluff received a $245,432 grant to purchase and install a solar array. The project is expected to save over $17,651 and replace 100 percent of their energy usage per year.

Monticello, La Sal schools closed virtual learning day, Montezuma Creek, and Navajo Mountain schools delay start due to weather

Monticello Elementary, Monticello High School and La Sal School will all be closed due to the weather, students at the schools will have a virtual learning day.
With a large winter storm hitting on Sunday and more inclement weather, three San Juan County schools will be on a two-hour delayed start on Monday, January 8.

With a large winter storm hitting on Sunday and more inclement weather, six San Juan County schools will be on a two-hour delayed start on Monday, January 8.
Schools include Montezuma Creek Elementary, Whitehorse High, Monticello Elementary, Monticello High, Navajo Mountain High, and La Sal Schools. Bus schedules will be delayed by two hours, and school start will be delayed by 2 hours and will begin at 10:00.
