The Navajo Nation aproved a study to explore how aquifers recharge in Oljato.
An agreement with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and NNDWR was signed by President Buu Nygren and will increase funding for a $267,300 study of the area aquifers according to a release from the President's office.
The area depends on wells and springs that are depleting.
After years of planning and gathering funds, Utah State University is pleased to announce the academic and community building planned in Monument Valley will break ground on August 2 at 10 a.m. The planned building, which will be located just northwest of Monument Valley High School, will serve students and community members of the Navajo Nation. The ceremony is open to all who wish to attend the groundbreaking.

Members of the San Juan County Commission got an update on the Goulding’s Lodge sale, approved a continued lease for communication infrastructure on BLM lands and discussed a possible renewable energy project area at their latest meeting.
Two peopole were killed on March 25 when the Ford Ranger they were in was struck by an oncoming Chevrolet Silverado. The Silverado driver is charged with four felony counts.
The crash occurred at around 8:30 p.m. on State Road 163, nine miles north of the Arizona border between Douglas Mesa turnoff and Forrest Gump Hill.
A unique photography program on the Navajo Nation is providing professional equipment and in-depth instruction to help transform how participants preserve and communicate their cultural values and customs.
The program will close its first session with a public exhibit at the Tsé Bii’ Ndzisgaii Community Center in Monument Valley from January 25 to February 15, 2024.

At their first game at the state tournament on March 1, the Monument Valley girls basketball team didn’t go into the locker room at halftime.
Despite playing in an important state tournament game, the Lady Cougars prioritized a fan who has prioritized Monument Valley sports for over 30 years.
Recognized at halftime of the game was super fan Patty Bedonie.
Freshman Sloane Sheppard was named Miss Monument Valley High School at the school’s annual pageant on Saturday, March 26.
First runner-up was awarded to senior Chalyishia Tsosie, while second runner-up goes to sophomore Dawnae Yazzie, and Miss Congeniality to sophomore Naima Goodman.
The senior class at Monument Valley High School is set to graduate on Friday, May 22 with a virtual graduation at 2 p.m. The event will be presented on the MVHS Facebook page.
The valedictorian is Alyvia Battles and the salutatorian is Karrilyn Yellowhair.
There are 33 students in the senior class.
When the Monument Valley High School girls basketball players went to sleep on Wednesday, February 26, it wasn’t sugarplums dancing in their heads. They were dreaming of their first-ever state championship trophy.
It wasn’t a far-fetched dream. The Lady Cougars had put together an impressive 18-5 regular season record and had been improving and bonding as a team all season.
Eleven months after being named Most Valuable Wrestler at the 2019 1A State Wrestling Tournament, Monument Valley High School senior Tanner Tsinigine was selected to wrestle in the 20th-annual Utah All-star Duals at Utah Valley University in Orem, UT.
In the 2018-2019 basketball season, the Monument Valley girls compiled a 19-6 overall record, their second winning season in a row. They won the Region 19 championship for the first time since 2013 and entered the state tournament ranked fourth.
The Monument Valley High School volleyball team was riding a three-game winning streak when they headed into the 1A Utah State Volleyball Championships on Friday, November 1 at Utah Valley University (UVU) in Orem.
Their 10-3 regular season record was good enough for third place in the UHSAA 1A volleyball RPI standings and earned them a first-round bye in the tourney.
It’s been a decent start for a largely inexperienced Monument Valley volleyball team with wins over Shonto Prep and Navajo Pine and a loss to Kayenta.
Sixth-year head coach Vanessa Russell said that she and her players are excited about what’s ahead. “I want to see the girls come together, work as a team, support each other on and off the floor, be able to close out games, and push themselves to get stronger,” she said.
San Juan County held a regular Commission meeting outside of Monticello for the first time on Tuesday, June 2 at the Monument Valley Welcome Center.
After a work session and a spirited half hour of public comment, Commissioner Kenneth Maryboy introduced Oljato Chapter President James Adakai, who addressed an audience largely of Monument Valley residents.
