Decision making at the San JuanRecord

While several journalistic outlets decided otherwise, we did not cover the story about the November 2022 traffic stop involving the son of San Juan County Commissioner Bruce Adams.
Simply, we felt that the story did not meet the criteria for news that we would report. In general, we do not report allegations, we report charges… and no charges were filed against Commissioner Adams.

Two free throws, and the weight of the world on your shoulders

Wow, what an amazing year for the San Juan Broncos! They added a basketball championship to the football trophy and left 1,001 incredible memories along the way.
What is you favorite memory?
My favorite memory of the season is unique. It is something that happened long before the bedlam of the closing seconds of the state tournament.
It was during a hot day in late July, in the middle of a Blanding summer.

San Juan Record releases annual 2022 Photo of the Week calendar

Featuring an incredible cover photo by Skyler Madison of Reflection Canyon on Lake Powell, the 2022 San Juan Record Photo of the Week calendar is ready for the new year and the holiday season.
The beautiful calendar features spectacular photos of San Juan County and includes all of the local events, holidays, school breaks, and more.

Time to transition to a new season

We are transitioning out of the summer season around here, with one season winding down and hints of the upcoming season beginning to show.
Of course, the culminating event of the summer is the San Juan County Fair, which wrapped up on August 7.  Even though the fair was muted because of budgetary restrictions, the magic of the fair was in full force, with large crowds and people having a great time.

Radio station open house is July 24

Redrock Radio will hold an open house at the new radio studio in Monticello during the Pioneer Day celebration on July 24.
The event will begin after the Pioneer Day Parade and run until about 1 p.m.
Stop by for tours, drawings, giveaways, and great deals.
The San Juan Record purchased the station in May 2020. Because of the COVID pandemic, a grand opening celebration was delayed until now.

This bird ain’t going to fly unless both wings work together!

During the April 8 press conference to discuss Bears Ears National Monument, a typical spring gust of wind blew through the courtyard at Edge of the Cedars State Park in Blanding.
The U.S. flag, which was proudly positioned behind the speakers, crashed to the ground. Sure enough, the right wing of the bald eagle finial on top of the flagpole was completely knocked off.

Remarkable week for Broncos... and SJR News

It was quite a week at the state basketball tournaments in Richfield.
The San Juan Record and Redrock Radio followed the local teams to the culminating games of the year, highlighted by a second-place finish for the San Juan Broncos in the 3A tournament.
The basketball action was intense and the behind-the-scenes action was almost as dramatic.

We can take time to do it right or just keep changing on a whim

One week into the Biden administration, it is clear that our spectacular little corner of the world will continue to be impacted by the actions of the federal government in Washington, D.C.
President Joe Biden follows Presidents Trump and Obama – for the third Administration in a row – in showing particular interest in the public lands in San Juan County.

Looking back at our 2020 stories of the year

Wow, 2020 was quite a year. Now that it’s in the rear-view mirror, we breathe a sigh of relief and hope for brighter days in 2021.
As we look back on a year like no other, I want to mention a few of the big stories that dominated the headlines.
Story of the Year: Coronavirus

Monolith continues to make headlines

The San Juan County monolith continues to make news across the world.
The hidden stainless-steel monolith was discovered in a remote corner of Lockhart Basin in mid-November. By the time it disappeared on November 27, it had garnered international (and maybe even some inter-galactic) attention.

Morning show on Redrock Radio

While many were shocked at the recent announcement that both the Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret News will no longer print a daily newspaper, we were not caught completely unaware at the San Juan Record.
More than a year ago, we were sent packing by MediaOne, the press in Salt Lake City which printed newspapers from throughout the area for many years, including the Tribune and Deseret News.

Thoughts on sexual assault story

The juvenile justice system is built on several fundamental principles, and the key among them is confidentiality. The system generally runs independent of general public awareness and oversight.
This is designed to protect both the victims and the perpetrators and to give youth the ability to learn from their mistakes, to heal away from public awareness, and to move ahead with their lives.

Still marching ahead

We continue to march ahead at the San Juan Record while implementing our 2020 Vision for the future. One of the biggest developments in a long list of changes is to announce David Boyle as the News Director (see the story on the front page).

Website improvements and 2019 visitor guides

We are proud to announce a new look for the online version of the San Juan Record.
Beginning with this issue, online subscribers who log in to read the paper will see a new interface with the online version.

Thanks to those who wear facemasks

While everyone is entitled to an opinion regarding wearing facemasks during the pandemic, I am certainly grateful for those who wear facemasks while interacting with the public.
According to public health officials, if you are exposed to someone with the virus, your chance of contracting coronavirus drops significantly if they are wearing a facemask.

More major relief efforts

There have been dozens of efforts over the past three months to offer relief and support for those who are suffering. It has been heartwarming to see.
The groups have worked in public and in private at a time of great need.

Just this week, a group of about 50 pilots in privately-owned small aircraft will converge on San Juan County to deliver PPE, food, learning aids, and other supplies.
