Body of missing man discovered in San Juan

The body of Jamey Eugene Holyoak, a Moab area resident who was reported missing in April, 2022, has been recovered and identified.
On September 11, 2025, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to skeletal remains that had been found by a citizen in San Juan County.
The Utah Medical Examiner’s office confirmed that the skeletal remains were human.

Women dies at Mesa Arch

A 76-year-old woman from New Jersey died on September 17 after collapsing on Mesa Arch Trail at the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park.
Rangers responded in the late afternoon to a report of CPR in progress near the trailhead.
Bystanders performed resuscitation on Lois Marcasciano of Pittsgrove, New Jersey, when emergency personnel arrived.

San Juan County approves new Public Health Director, updates NDOT road agreement

Members of the San Juan County Commission appointed a new public health director, approved an amendment for bus route maintenance on the Navajo Nation, and a settlement with a centrally assessed property at their latest meeting.
Members of the county commission approved the appointment of Jordon Begay as the county Public Health Director and local health officer at the September 16 meeting.

Water use and forecast plan required for county

Sage Potash receives $14 million from USDA

Sage Potash, a Canadian company set on developing a potash mining project in eastern San Juan County, received a $14 million grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The company says the funding will support the financing strategy for the construction of a 300,000 tonnes-per-year potash project in the Paradox Basin.

Unsecured loads to county landfill will be fined

Tensions run high at Planning Commission

Tensions ran high during a nearly five-hour meeting of the San Juan County Planning Commission.
Despite a tense high point about an hour into the meeting, the commission moved forward to review and discuss community comments on Chapters 1-6 of the 2025 Land Use Ordinance. They also made motions related to the Loves Travel Stop proposal in Spanish Valley.

County okays Sky Ranch again, makes plans for updating General Plan

San Juan County Man Indicted for Second Degree Murder

A federal grand jury returned an indictment today charging a San Juan County man with second degree murder after he allegedly shot a man to death.
Chevel Cottonwood, age 34, was charged by complaint on June 11, 2025, and ordered detained by a U.S. Magistrate Judge.

Man from Kayenta, AZ drowns in San Juan

A 50-year old Kayenta, Arizona man drowned in the San Juan River on June 8.
Glen Canyon National Recreation Area reported the man was overtaken by river currents downstream of Paiute Farms Wash around 3:00 pm on Sunday June 8.

 The San Juan Record is pleased to release the new 101 Ways to Experience San Juan County Visitors Guide.
The packed 64-page magazine was included in the most recent issue of the newspaper and is distributed by the tens of thousands throughout the area at visitor centers and businesses.
