Deer Creek fire stable, at 77% containment

The Deer Creek Fire in old La Sal remains stable with suppression repair on the interior islands and fire perimeter underway.
At a stable 17,724 acres, the fire has remained at 77-percent containment for nearly a week. Officials have put an estimated containment date of August 7.

Human-caused Deer Creek Fire burns 17,00 acres with containment exceeding 50 percent

The Deer Creek Fire in old La Sal is now at 17,184 acres burned but has seen containment rise to 54 percent as of the report on the morning of July 22.
The containment line is mostly on the south, west and parts of the north side of the fire.
On July 21, San Juan County Sheriff Lehi Lacy shared in a statement that the sheriff’s office with the Utah Fire Authority has determined that the fire was human caused.

Incredible La Sal “fire-nado” given EF-2 rating

The National Weather Service issued a report on the fire-filled tornado as part of the Deer Creek fire.
The fire-induced tornado developed on Saturday July 12, touching down on the ground for about 12 minutes from 1:03 to 1:15 pm.
The tornado grew to 100 yards at its largest measurement but was relatively stationary, traveling less than 200 yards. 

Deer Creek Fire over 15,655 acres and growing.

The Deer Creek Fire in old La Sal grew to 14,760 acres on July 16 and is seven-percent contained, as the fire is moving into Colorado.
Officials are reporting containment lines on the southern portion of the fire are continuing to hold. Additionally there are no major concerns on the west side of the fire as they continue to work on that containment line as well.

10,000 acres burned by Deer Creek Fire near Old La Sal

The Deer Creek Fire in old La Sal has grown to 10,000 acres and is zero-percent contained.
Despite that fire officials are reporting that they are making progress during typical weather conditions. With an emphasis that Firefighter and public safety continue to be the top priority.

Fire in old La Sal grows to 4,000 acres

UPDATE July 11 3:30 pm:
The fire evacuation alert from the San Juan County Sheriff's Office has been updated to areas off Upper 2 Mile Road to the Utah-Colorado border.
The fire is now estimated at 6,500 acres and has resulted in two primary homes, two secondary residences and five outbuildings confirmed lost in the Mountain Shadow area.

San Juan County residents, members of the planning commission and county staff met for over five hours on January 9 to discuss a proposed update to the county land use ordinance. 

Williams crew donates improvements to La Sal Community Center

Just one year ago, Williams Northwest Pipeline began holding its first “Volunteer Week” in an effort to make meaningful contributions to the communities served by its natural gas facilities.
This year’s project was focused on making improvements to the La Sal Community center, which is owned by the County and houses the La Sal branch library.

There is so much happening in our community right now that I thought I would uncap the ink bottle and sharpen the nib of my quill.   Some, but not all of the activities are related to the holiday season.
First, there is always something afoot at Es’ La Sal Store.  Right now it is that Mr. E. (Everett) is not on premises.  He has hied himself to Colorado where they are opening a second store in Naturita.  We wish him luck.

Unfortunately, besides the changing of the season, the start of the holiday season with all their festivities, it’s cold, flu and new to the gang, COVID season. 
Mr. C has been making the rounds of our community as I’m sure it is everywhere.  Fortunately, most folks are having just a few days of sickness and not near-death experiences. 

La Sal man dies in woodcutting accident

Brad Nivens of La Sal died in a wood harvesting accident on September 19 on the La Sal Mountain. He was cutting wood with two friends, which they had done together all summer. He was hit by a felled tree on the back of his head and neck. 

Lots of road work going on in northern San Juan County

The San Juan County road folks have been very busy of late in our vicinity.  
With all the moisture, as in deep snow on The Mountain, you can imagine the damage run-off has done to the roads.  There are deep cuts in some of the local’s favorite routes.  
It’s getting close to time to head up to the higher climes for summer recreation.  

New proprietors take over at the La Sal Store

Ana’s La Sal Store is no more.  Ana and Hal Adams have retired (a second time for Hal) and turned over the management of our little store to new operators.  
The Adams have been very successful in operating the convenience store for the last several years.  Now they can enjoy a much-deserved rest from the heavy duty of keeping the store supplied with goods and the day-to-day operation of the facility.

Columnist named La Sal Citizen of the Year

Maxine Deeter was named La Sal Citizen of the Year at a gathering at the La Sal Community Center on December 27. Deeter, a longtime resident of La Sal, has served the community for decades, including many years as the the writer of Northern News column in the San Juan Record. Maxine was surprised when La Sal citizens showed up to cheer when Hardy Redd present the award. She thought the party was to celebrate her husband Steve’s 75th birthday.

La Sal residents are concerned about impact of a new subdivision on local water wells

A new subdivision in La Sal has many residents worried about its potential impact on water availability in the area.
Legacy Fields, owned by Kelly Shumway, is situated off of East Markle in La Sal and has been subdivided for 114 lots, 18 of which have been approved by the San Juan County Planning and Zoning Commission.
