The National Weather Service has issued additional information about recent tornados in San Juan County on Saturday, September 13.
The National Weather Service reported two tornadoes touched down on September 13, with one recorded by the agency to be lasting about 15 minutes and causing no damage, with no rating given on the tornado.
The second reported tornado touched down at 12:58 pm and lasted until 1:45 pm.
Given a rating of EF-2, with estimated peak winds of 120 miles per hour and an estimated path length of one mile in the McCracken Mesa and Cahone Mesa areas.
No one was injured during the storms, but the second tornado did destroy three homes, with additional homes, hay barns, and horse trailers damaged or destroyed.
Livestock and pets were also reported missing. The tornado also downed power poles that led to a disruption in power.
Since 1950, The National Weather Services reports there have been six tornados in San Juan County. Five of the six tornados were recorded in the past two years, including the EF-2 tornado in September and the EF-2 ‘fire’nado as part of the Deer Creek fire in La Sal in July.
Both EF-2 rated tornados destroyed several homes, but no injuries were reported in either case.
None of the other four tornadoes reported in San Juan County over the past 75 years were rated above EF-0.
