La Sal, Elko, Heber City

I was in Hawaii years ago and stood in line behind a man who wore a cap embroidered with the words, “Paris, New York, Moab”.
Hmm, thinks I, must have bought the hat in Moab. Bet he didn’t get it in Paris or even New York.
So now La Sal can tout that it goes with Elko and Heber City. What do these towns have in common? Most folks won’t know, but a few of the “breed” will recognize the commonality.

Senseless, random acts of kindness

Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it – all at once.  For several years folks have been praying for moisture which is so desperately needed in our dry, arid desert country. This while others on both the west and east coasts are enduring horrible floods.

As if it weren’t cold enough yet

The world, at least our local world, kind of fell into a deep freeze after Christmas. We only had a smattering of snow left on the ground when the big day arrived, but I guess you could still call it a White Christmas.
Shortly thereafter, the snow began to fall in earnest. By then Ma Nature had sent a cold arctic blast – or maybe it was something that followed Santa from the North Pole and just hung around a while.

All kinds of events and non-events

‘Tis the season for holiday events, however in our village there are some non-holiday happenings as well.  And some events that did not happen.
For a couple of weeks, the folks who attend worship services at the Latter-Day-Saint church have noticed a smell of propane.  For those of us who live in our outlying area, we know this is usually a sign that the propane tank is about empty.  Not so.

Scarier than normal Halloween Carnival

I can’t give you a firsthand report on this year’s Halloween Carnival as I was out of town for a couple of weeks.
However, on the evening of the carnival, my spouse got a call from one of the coven moms – this year’s mover and shaker and doing-much-of-the-work gal, Tiffany Broderick Smith. She said there was a strong smell of propane and she was afraid of a leak.

Hollywood, La Sal, and the rest of the story

A couple of folks have asked me if there is filming going on in La Sal. Well, not right in La Sal proper, but up on The Mountain, there is a lot of filming activity underway. Although, I think the advent of winter may have put a little damper on that and delayed production for awhile.
Several folks in our village are involved in the filming activities – some as extras, one as young as four years old, and one as a horse wrangler.

Scene Right Out of a Hollywood Movie

I could report that we are expecting Hollywood to descend upon the environs of La Sal to do some filming for a major motion picture as well as shots for TV series, or so I’ve heard.  And, that would be true.  However, that pretty much pertains to all of SE Utah.
No, what I am reporting today is an incident that looked like a high speed vehicle scene from a movie, but was in fact a true life incident.

Welcome beautiful, wacky Autumn

The last days of summer garnered us a beautiful, much-needed, much prayed-for rain. It was a slow, ground-soaking, all-day rain. The total rainfall was 1.1 inches over a nine-day period, with rain falling on six of those days.

It’s time to catch up

The last few columns have been special features and I have neglected to report some lesser happenings in our little village. Hopefully today I can rectify that just a little bit.
School is back in session at La Sal E. as it is all around the area. There are some changes this year to staffing. Ms. Shupe is back as head teacher.

“Why does the sun go on shining?”

Be forewarned, this week’s column is going to be very personal.
In the words of Skeeter Davis, a one hit wonder from the 60s:  “Why does the sun go on shining?”
It’s something we wonder when we lose someone very dear.
Two weeks ago I lost my best friend of 50 years, my soul sister.   For me, the world is a little dimmer, though I think the heavenly side of things shines a little brighter.

Food, fun, friends, no rain, and surprise!

The use to be annual La Sal Community cookout on The Mountain was held last Saturday after a two-year absence as is the case with many events of late.
This was formerly “This Is It” day, aka Pioneer Day, but recent organizers have moved it to later in the summer.
No matter. It’s still the same fun time in the cool confines high above La Sal.

A Promise Fulfilled – Finally

Last week’s newspaper had a photo of flooding at the Hideout Golf Club. A couple of weeks before that, there was flooding in parts of Moab.
La Sal sits between the two towns, but rain has been noticeably absent in our village environs. We keep looking at our weather app on our smarter than us phones and just can’t see how storms could possibly miss us, but they do.

Slithering, sliding, and crawling to La Sal

That would be the return of “Scales and Tales” on July 1 at the La Sal Community Center. These folks and their critters have been here before and are liked by many.
I’d give you a firsthand report, but I’m not one of those who cares for snakes and lizards and other creepy crawlies.

La Sal Transitions to Summer – Sort Of

Well, if the wind would stop blowing, we’d think it was Spring. Every year some folks say they think it is blowing harder this year. I’m inclined to agree. The temperatures are nice, but the wind, ugh! Okay, so it would not be Spring here if there were not wind.

Northern News: Hollywood Blows Into La Sal

This time of year, the wind blows in fiercely one day and blows on the next. That has certainly been the case this Spring.
Last week, “Hollywood” did much the same in our village.
They blew in one day and after a furious round of activity, were just as quickly gone.

Plug Your Ears, The Kabooms are Returning

After a hiatus of a couple of years or more, the infamous La Sal Dynamite Shoot is back! Course, a lot of things have been absent for two years as the world went through a pandemic. But as far as I know, there is only one dynamite shoot and it’s ours. Okay, there are probably others out there somewhere, but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
