The Winter of My Discontent

Truth be told, I’m discontent every winter. I don’t like cold or snow or wind. I threaten to move back to Southern Arizona each year. I was recently talking to a friend about how I hated wind and cold. He says, you hate wind and cold, but you live in La Sal?
Our winters really aren’t that severe, they are just so LONG. In fact, you may have seen snow in just the last day or two. We can take comfort in the fact that,

A Little Geometry Refresher

A couple of events occurred this week within the time warp – me writing, you reading. Such is the reality of a weekly newspaper.
Sunday night was the March meeting of the La Sal Literary Guild.  I know that’s a strange night for us to meet, but there was a short deadline in getting our books returned to the State library.

Is it springtime in the Rockies yet?

We’ve had many days recently that feel like spring. Then last week we received some muchneeded and much-prayed-for snow and some frigid temperatures.
This week however, we are slated for the return of springlike weather. By then we should be able to enjoy a wonderful mud event too.

‘Tis The Season for Seeds, Scams and Super Sales

As soon as the Holidays are over, I’m yearning for Spring.  I’m not a winter person!  That’s when the seed and plant catalogues start arriving in the mail.
I think the first one came on January 2 this year.  Heck, it was only two weeks into official winter.  I keep telling my spouse that he shouldn’t even give me the bulb advertisements, but he doesn’t listen.

A centurion among us

Several decades ago, the Kyle family moved to La Sal.  In all the years they lived here, they were active in community affairs and an integral part of our village.

The play that almost wasn’t. Was it a Grinch that stole the show?

December 21 was the night appointed for the annual (except for last year) La Sal Elementary School Christmas Program.
After being skipped last year due to COVID, there was a lot of anticipation for the program’s return. Scheduled for this year was the play “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”
Parts were learned, songs and readings memorized, and everything rehearsed in anticipation of the upcoming stellar performance.

Please pardon me while I interrupt

It’s not my week to write this column, but there is some updating necessary.
First of all, the La Sal Elementary kiddos program has been moved up a day to Tuesday, December 21. It starts at 6 p.m. sharp. These folks somehow ignore La Sal Standard time.
Next, a report on the first (hopefully annual) Cowboy Christmas Craft Fair.

Two special longtime La Sal men pass away

The last month has seen the passing of two special men who were longtime residents of La Sal.
Ned Kirk, 69, passed away after a long illness at his home in La Sal on November 26, 2021. At his request, he will be cremated. A memorial service will be held for him in January.
He and his wife, Connie, have been longtime residents of La Sal.

T minus one for Thanksgiving

If you read the weekly newspaper in digital form, then tomorrow is turkey day. If not, well, then your Thanksgiving dinner is probably already digested. And if you’re lucky, you have a fridge full of leftovers.
Hopefully everyone had a great day full of family, friends, food, a good nap, and lots of gratitude.
Soon it will be December. Looking at the local calendar of events, it’s going to be a full month of activities.

La Sal family loses all in early morning fire

Early Tuesday morning, November 2, a mother and her adult son lost all their worldly possessions as their mobile home caught fire and burned literally to the ground. The home was in the trailer court in La Sal.
It is a great credit to the training and response of the La Sal Volunteer Fire Department that the fire was confined to just this one structure.

La Sal loses a couple of grand ladies

I guess it is not to be unexpected in a village with an abundance of senior citizens, that they depart not to unexpectedly. Two weeks ago, folks in La Sal heard of the passing of Lola Mackie one of our more colorful seniors.

Autumn happenings pick up in Sierra La Sal

It is definitely fall. The colors have just burst upon The Mountain.
A recent reconnoiter to see the leaves indicated a lot of folks headed that way for the regular elk hunt, which began last Saturday. The mountain will be densely populated with hunters by now.
That will be followed by the regular deer hunt which usually brings a plethora of people.

A truly great and gentle man passes

George Wesley “Wes” Hill passed away peacefully at his home Sunday morning after a short and valiant battle with cancer. His loving wife Rhonda was with him at the time of his passing.
Wes and Rhonda moved to La Sal about ten years ago, purchasing the old CCC barracks to convert it into a home. Wes saw the vision of what a nice home it could be and worked hard towards that end.

Blessings coming down and dirty-dog outlaws

In the 1930s there was a hit song: “Pennies from Heaven.”
It would be nice to have little copper coins raining down upon us even though a penny isn’t worth what it used to be.
No, really. We’d rather have the wet stuff coming down.
That’s just what we got a couple of weeks ago, though not in the amounts predicted which was heavy rainfall and flash flooding. Thank goodness too; look what happened to Hanksville.

To eat or not to eat, that is the question

For many years, the community of La Sal has headed to The Mountain for a cook-out to celebrate “This Is It” Day, aka Pioneer Day.
Last year, of course, it was cancelled due to the pandemic.
July 2021 was baking hot, so the festivities were postponed for cooler weather.
Unfortunately, just when we thought the virus was waning and we could relax a little, it has reared its ugly head again.

A great La Sal lady passes away

Julia Josephine Wareham (Cookie), 82, passed away July 21, 2021, at Four Corners Care Center in Blanding where she had resided for the last few months.
Julia and her husband Gerald had been living in Old La Sal for several years. That is where they built their little dream home, a lovely log cabin that brought them much joy.
